What is Gearbox?

A Renault gearbox is a mechanical component used to change the speed (RPM) and increase the motor’s torque in layman’s terms. Now regarding the location of the Renault gearbox in the car, it is connected to the motor from one end. The shaft of the motor is associated with the gearbox via gears. The gear ratio will determine the speed and torque. The Renault gearbox is a kind of speed change device that realizes the speed change effect through the meshing of large and small gears and has many applications in the speed change of industrial machinery. The large gear is installed on the low-speed shaft in the Renault gearbox, and a small gear is installed on the high-speed shaft.

Benefits of Renault Gearbox

Improved Efficiency:
Matching the motor speed to the optimal speed of equipment can improve overall system efficiency. Without a Renault gearbox, the motor might run at a speed that is not ideal for the application, leading to wasted energy and decreased performance.

Enhanced Control:
Renault Gearboxes allow for better control over the speed and motion of machinery. By adjusting the gear ratio, you can fine-tune the speed and torque characteristics to meet specific operational requirements.

Extended Motor Life:
Operating a motor at lower speeds can reduce wear and tear, leading to a longer motor lifespan. Renault Gearboxes can help ensure the motor operates within its optimal speed range, reducing stress and extending its service life.

Noise Reduction:
Renault Gearboxes can help reduce noise by allowing the motor to run at a more efficient, lower speed while providing the necessary speed and torque at the output. This is particularly beneficial in applications where noise is a concern.

Versatility:
Renault Gearboxes provide flexibility in adjusting output speed and torque. This allows a single motor to be used in various applications by changing the gearbox to suit different requirements.

Type of Renault Gearbox

Helical Gearbox

Helical gearboxes feature gears in parallel or crossed positions and locked at 90-degree angles. Low-power and compact, they are particularly suited for heavy-duty operations. Helical gearboxes are often found in plastics, rubber, cement, and similar heavy industrial settings and applications, including crushers, coolers, extruders, and conveyors.

Coaxial Helical Inline Gearbox

Coaxial helical inline gearboxes put the output shaft and driveshaft on the same rotation axis. They offer extremely high efficiency and power density and are manufactured to maximize load and transmission ratios. While suitable for many applications, coaxial helical inline gearboxes are ideal for heavy-duty applications.

Bevel Helical Gearbox

Primarily used in quarries and the mining industry, bevel helical gearboxes have a curved set of teeth on a cone-shaped surface close to the rim. They provide rotary motion between non-parallel shafts. Bevel helical gearboxes operate more quietly and smoothly than spur gears. They are the most commonly used gear in transmissions.

Skew Bevel Helical Gearbox

Rigid and robust, the skew bevel helical gearbox is perfect for transporting heavy loads. Once mounted on the correct motor shaft output, these industrial gearboxes are highly customizable based on the number of teeth and gears.

Worm Reduction Gearbox

Worm reduction gearboxes are often the solution when increased speed is needed. Most are used in heavy industries, such as minerals, chemicals, and fertilizer. The gearbox has a large-diameter worm wheel that meshes with the teeth on the gearbox’s peripheral area. The worm’s rotating motion makes the wheel move as well, thanks to the screw-like movement.

Planetary Gearbox

This type of industrial gearbox got its name from a formation of gears that resembles our solar system. A central gear (sun gear) is surrounded by three or four smaller gears (planet gears). This formation equally moves power through the gears and creates high torque in a small space.

Application of Renault Gearbox

Paper Industry

The paper industry is experiencing a surge in its popularity that ultimately results in the demand for gearboxes. A wide variety of gearboxes made from aluminum alloys, steel, and cast iron are used in the paper industry which manages the smooth working of the machines. Some of the commonly used gearboxes in this particular industry are Shaft mounted and spur gearboxes.

Cement Industry

The cement industry recalls gearboxes that are strong and carries higher torque depending upon the size of the engine used in the processing. Thus, the gearboxes such as Bevel Helical Gearboxes and Parallel Shafts are used to apply the functionalities such as Engine augmentation, reduction in speed, and many others. In such type of industry, gearboxes are utilized to increase the amount of engine torque to the most possible level.

Sugar Industry

It is one of the biggest industries that possess the usage of a wide assortment of machines. More machines imply more usage of the different variety of gearboxes such as planetary, helical, etc to manage the requirements of different ratios and torque capacities. The gearboxes used in this industrial unit are available in base form. Whatever type of gearboxes are used in the functioning of the sugar industry, the result appeared in the form of well-organized and sound functioning of the machines thereby resulting in a positive outcome.

Steel Industry

Another industrial unit asks for strict usage of gearboxes because of the use of sturdy machines for the manufacturing process. Here the machines are hard wearing and thus they require the use of Industrial Gearboxes that are enduring and tough in their processing. In this industry, gearboxes such as pinion, planetary, and many other related ones are used for the smooth and long-lasting functioning of the machines.

How Does a Gearbox Work?

A car’s engine is responsible for the power required to move the car. However, the generated power must be sent through the car Renault gearbox or transmission between the engine and the wheels.

Not passing the generated power through the Renault gearbox will mean the wheel will run at a high speed. Hence, the location of the car transmission box in the vehicle setup and its functions helps tone down the engine’s power.

A Renault gearbox in a manual car has seven gears, including first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth gear, and reverse. The driver pushes the clutch pedal to disconnect the Renault gearbox. Afterward, he selects the gear using a lever connected to a series of selector rods attached to the top or side of the transmission.

The general notion is that using a lower gear will lead to a lower engine speed. This means the first gear has the highest torque and the lowest speed. The driver then releases the clutch and engages the accelerator to move the vehicle.

In an automatic vehicle, there is no gear stick or clutch. The driver only needs to push the accelerator or brake pedal as expected. Unlike the manual vehicle Renault gearbox, the automatic vehicle Renault gearbox uses sensors to identify when the car needs to change gear.

To change the gear, the torque converter disengages the engine and the gearbox and creates pressure using transmission fluid. The pressure generated is then used to drive the sun, planetary, and ring gears, which meshes the gears together like the manual to achieve the required speed.

The 6 Steps In The Renault Gearbox Repair Process Simplified

Gearboxes are sophisticated pieces of machinery that must be very carefully installed and just as carefully repaired. Whenever you need to have your gearbox repaired, it is important to make certain that the correct steps are performed in the right order. Over the years, repair and service techniques have been optimized to enhance machine performance and longevity.

“Not to Exceed” quote
When you contact the Renault gearbox service shop, the first thing they should do is provide you with a “Not to Exceed” quote, assuming they are repairing a familiar gearbox with known costs associated. This will detail the potential cost involved in the renewal of your drive. Of course, additional services can be requested for a fee such as magnetic particle inspection. This service ensures that any hairline cracks in the unit are discovered before work begins.

Initial assessment
When your industrial Renault gearbox has been received, a basic visual assessment of the exterior is carried out before actually opening the unit. This step involves examining the outer surfaces and checking the overall functionality of the equipment, bearing settings, and the backlash.

Disassembly
During this step of the Renault gearbox repair process, the technicians will take the unit completely apart. All of the machine’s components, even the bearings, will be disassembled. This will allow the technician to capture the condition in which your gearbox, and its internal components, arrived at the facility.

“As Found Condition” report
After the initial inspection and disassembly have been conducted, the technician should provide an “As Found Condition” report. This report will include photographs of your drive with any noticable damage and observations made by the technician.

Renewal
Once you have approved the quote for the renewal of your drive and the unit has been disassembled, the renewal process can begin.Parts can often be cleaned and reused, rather than replaced, which helps you save money. Any information about parts that do or do not need to be replaced will be included in the condition report so you will not be surprised. Components that may need to be replaced include gears and pinions, as well as shafts.

Quality assurance testing
After the renewal of your drive has been completed, all parts are reassembled by specialists. At this stage, gear clearances will be established and a no load spin test will be conducted. These quality assurance measures provide peace of mind and help ensure the longevity of your drive. If the drive passes these tests for both vibration and noise, it will be sand blasted and repainted with two layers of epoxy paint.

Components of Renault Gearbox

Main Shaft

In a Renault gearbox, the main shaft is the output shaft. This shaft is kept in front of the clutch shaft or engine output shaft, parallel to the lay shaft. This shaft is attached to the gear lever that is used to change the gears.

Clutch Shaft

The output from the engine is sent to the gearbox using a clutch shaft. This shaft allows to engage and disengage the engine output.

Lay Shaft

Lay shafts are used to transfer power from the engine to the main shaft by continuously meshing the lay shaft gear with the clutch shaft gear.

Synchromesh Shaft

They are the unique components found in modern synchromesh gearboxes. By keeping the main shaft, lay shaft, and clutch shaft at the same speed, they facilitate smooth gear shifting. They don’t have to move over the shaft for the gears to change.

Gears

In essence, gears are just circles with teeth connecting them. A gear transmits a circular motion between two different shafts by rotating and meshing with another gear on the other shaft. Gears come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including spur gear, helical gear, bevel gear, and worm gear.

Gear Lever

The driver uses the gear lever to change or shift the gear. The lever moves in a particular way according to design.

FAQ

Q: What is a gearbox in a car?

A: A gearbox, also known as transmission, is a mechanical component that helps to transfer power from the engine to the wheels by using different gear ratios. It is usually located between the engine and the wheels, consisting of several gears, shafts and bearings.

Q: Is a gearbox the same as the transmission?

A: A transmission is what allows the power to be transferred from the engine to the drive shaft which then sends that power to the driving wheels. As a part of the transmission, a gearbox houses the gears that determine how much power is transferred to the drive shaft via revolutions or 'revs'.

Q: Why is it called a gearbox?

A: The most basic definition of a gearbox is that it is a mechanical unit or component consisting of a gear train or set of gears embedded in a housing. In fact, the name itself defines it as a box containing gears. In the most basic sense, a gearbox works like a gear system.

Q: What is the purpose of using a gearbox?

A: Gearboxes are used to transfer energy from one rotating power source to another and can be found in automobiles, turbines, and heavy machinery. See the Crankshaft and Piston definitions for more information on how a myriad of internal components interact to provide safe movement in almost all forms of machinery.

Q: Do all cars have a gearbox?

A: Vehicles with internal combustion engines, unlike electric vehicles, require the engine to operate in a narrow range of rates of rotation, requiring a gearbox, operated manually or automatically, to drive the wheels over a wide range of speeds.

Q: Why does a car need a gearbox?

A: A gearbox is an essential component in most cars with internal combustion engines. Its role is to convert the engine's power into torque and deliver it to the wheels. The gearbox houses a series of interlocking gears of various sizes that work together to manipulate rotation speed and torque.

Q: Is a clutch a gearbox?

A: The clutch is a separate connection in the transmission, linking the engine to the gearbox. It thus enables starting away from rest and changing gear. The clutch is operated via the clutch pedal and the clutch release system.

Q: How much does it cost to replace a gearbox?

A: A manual gearbox replacement can cost anywhere from £500 to upwards of £3,000. An automatic gearbox replacement can cost anywhere from £1,000 to upwards of £5,000. The availability of parts and any additional labour or installation fees can have an impact on the gearbox price.

Q: Can a car drive without a gearbox?

A: The function of a gearbox is to increase torque. It does this by reducing the speed of the output shaft, even if the input shaft from the engine is spinning fast. In an electric car, you don't need a gearbox because all torque is available from the get-go. And electronics can be used to precisely control motor speed.

Q: Is a gearbox a transmission?

A: A transmission (also called a gearbox) is a mechanical device which uses a gear set—two or more gears working together—to change the speed, direction of rotation, or torque multiplication/reduction in a machine.

Q: Why do motors need gearbox?

A: To reduce shaft speeds, many DC motors are paired with a gearbox. This helps to reduce the motor's shaft speed, and increase the torque output of the motor. In most cases, torque is increased by the ratio of the gear reduction, minus any losses in the gearbox.

Q: What will a bad gearbox do?

A: With a vehicle with a gearbox bearing failure symptoms, you may experience shaking, jerking or grinding while behind the wheel. Automatic gearbox issues often involve hesitation, slipping, or trembling during gear changes. Manuals are more likely to "grind" when suffering a gearbox fault.

Q: Why do cars have gearboxes?

A: Gearboxes are used to balance the engine's RPM (Revolutions per Minute) and ensure that there is not too much or too little power being transferred to the wheels at any given time. Without a gearbox, a car's engine would quickly overheat or the vehicle would be unable to reach its specified car engine capacity.

Q: Is gearbox a clutch?

A: A clutch connects and disconnects two working components such as an engine crankshaft and a transmission/transaxle input shaft. A gearbox is generally used to provide an increase in torque and corresponding decrease is speed between an input shaft and an output shaft.

Q: What machines use a gearbox?

A: The helical gearbox is prevalent in the plastics, cement, and rubber industries and other heavy industrial contexts. Low-power applications such as crushers, extruders, coolers, and conveyors may benefit from this material.
